St. Joseph the Worker has an outstanding record of involvement in social justice work. We advocate for better education, affordable workforce housing, food and shelter for needy families and youth, building homes, and many other projects. The leader of this fantastic efforts for the past 30+ years has been Roxanne Smith, our social justice staff person. She has found folks who want to do all of these projects. Then she has called forth from these interested people leaders to spearhead the efforts in the respective areas. She has recently told us that she is going to retire this summer. No one can replace her with her experience, connections and energy. But we are going to try to find someone who can at least walk in her shoes while they learn the ropes. BUT, Roxanne has been working 32 hours a week for most of her time her, dedicating herself to her family and outside interests. We are going to need to offer someone a full time position, I believe, to entice them to take on this job. That will mean a 25% increase on salary for that position. And tragically we do not have the extra money in income to pay for that increase. Most of you work at full time jobs. You do them well and are extremely competent in your work. You are leaders in your staffs. Roxanne is also. She is a leader on our staff, in our town, and in the diocese. Finding anyone to be willing to take on this job will be difficult. Now is the time to step up your contributions to help us find someone who is willing to plunge into this work with the same spirit Roxanne has shown over the years.
