Many times I get a phone call from Hospice or a family member asking me to anoint someone who is approaching death. In my conversations, it frequently comes up that the person who is dying is Catholic or at least was raised Catholic so the family would like the person to receive “last rites”. Other than the fact we no longer use that as the common term, it also tells me that the family has not been active in any church for some years. I feel bad for them because they have been missing the one essential element offered by a faith community; the connections made by being a part of something larger. I know many of you continue to reach out to family and neighbors who are experiencing some sort of need. Maybe after a surgery, you are going grocery shopping for another family. Perhaps one of their kids needs to go to a practice or game that one of your kids is playing in. These sorts of things are what our Commitment to Parish Life is all about. Discovering that the things we do each day extends beyond the walls of our building into the lives of our parishioners. The stronger the connection, the greater the sense of community. What sort of connections have you made with the parish of St. Joseph the Worker?
