Recently in the paper there was a story about a person who worked in a non-profit organization. He was laid off because of the virus. The story also told about how there is a loss of over 50% in non-profits since the beginning of the virus 5 months ago. I want to commend you, as people of faith, for your continuing support of St. Joseph the Worker. No one could have guessed that our society and our parish would be affected by anything like this virus 8 months ago. Everyone’s lives have been turned inside out. Yet week after week a couple hundred cars show up every Sunday for our car-Masses. You have been on line for many of our adult education materials, participating in Zoom offerings, and doing creative things with your children to teach them the value of a faith community. I hope our children are learning that life is more about giving of oneself to others than it is about getting things. When we first went to St. Catherine’s we asked them what they had to give us. Their initial reaction was that they had nothing. But we pointed out that they have strong family bonds, they walk long distances to attend Mass every week, they care for and minister to neighbor’s who are sick or dying. They have much to give to us in revealing the value of people in our lives. They told us that no one had ever explained to them the value they bring to relationships. Now your family and your children have an opportunity to discover that for themselves. Do they miss their friends? Do they miss the sports or summer activities they were used to? Then it is an opportunity to discover and reflect upon how important people are to them. You continue to do that by your participation in parish activities and providing your financial support. Our income has not dropped since the pandemic began. You have been consistent in your support for the parish, and we are grateful. May God continue to bless you and your family. May He watch over you and provide you with meaningful human relationships.
